About the boat: | Miss Scarlet is a Reichel/Pugh Designed IRC 52 built by Composite Constructions.
Miss Scarlet will be sailed in the 2020 RNI by Graeme Wilson & William Goodfellow. Miss Scarlet has some pretty impressive racing under her belt over the last two years including the Auckland to Noumea Race, New Caledonia Groupama Race, Magnetic Island Race Week, Hamilton Island Race Week, Bay of Islands Race Week, the Jack Tar Regatta, the SSANZ Series and will also add the 2020 RNI to that list early next year. |

Tell us a little about your sailing history/ background | Grew up sailing and using boats as transport in the Bay of Islands, turned the passion into a job starting the Explore Group with the America’s Cup yachts in the Viaduct and other boating experiences in Auckland, the Bay of Islands and the Whitsunday’s Australia. Particularly enjoy racing shorthanded, offshore and classic yachts. |
What appeals most about doing the RNI | The overall challenge. |
What are your essential food items during the race? | Dehy, dehy, dehy, no dishes… |
What will your meals be like during the race? | Deluxe dehydrate… |
What’s your favourite point of sail and why? | Anything and everything that isn’t bashing upwind |
What do you like most about the boat you are sailing on? | An all rounder mile eater. |
Describe your skipper/co-skipper in 5 words | Solid at sea and debrief… |
What’s your biggest fear when you think about the RNI? | Headlands with no wind and lots of tide e.g. RNI 2017. |
Who’s your biggest opposition and why? | Particularly the 50+ footers, as are generally competitive in comparable conditions. |
Tell us about your biggest supporters | My wife, as I somehow continue to be able to announce adventures like this without insurmountable resistance… My kids because they think it is normal. |
What’s most exciting/challenging about this race for you? | Having a big fleet, it is going to be epic! |
It’s the night before the big race – how do you get your head in the game? | An issues meeting in a Viaduct establishment. |

Tell us a little about your sailing history/ background | I had the usual sailing upbringing in NZ, crew for Dad, followed by P Class, Starling, Laser (all on the Manukau out of Blockhouse Bay) and then the family yacht was Namu and we did the RNZYS and Richmond series. As the youngest in the family, Bow was my job and that is why I now like being an owner! The last 30 years I have been based in Sydney and have enjoyed harbour racing and all of the offshore races and regattas on the Australian east coast north of Sydney. |
What appeals most about doing the RNI | Tricky corners, Wellington craft beer, oil rigs and Will on the Bow… |
What are your essential food items during the race? | Sausage rolls and Em’s Power Cookies. |
What will your meals be like during the race? | Depends on who does the provisioning. Will once turned up with a tray of Sushi to feed the crew on a Fiji race.
Hopefully we can enlist some help cooking sausage rolls, as home made is best. |
What do you like most about the boat you are sailing on? | A very kind girl who knows her way around the Island. |
Describe your skipper/co-skipper in 5 words | Tall, seaworthy and can lift heavy things. |
What’s your favourite drink and why? | Bloody Shiraz Gin with limes to ward off the scurvy. |
Will you be taking any luxury items on the race? – If so, what is it and why? | Bloody Shiraz Gin. |
What’s your biggest fear when you think about the RNI? | Getting round the corners. |
Who’s your biggest opposition and why? | Awen at 60 ft |
Tell us about your biggest supporters | My wife Lesley and son Logan, our awesome boat captain Jesse Turner. Plus everyone else involved in the programme to get Miss Scarlet to the start line… Brett Bakewell-White, Pete Geary, Bart (NZ Rigging), the Doyles team, Josh Tucker and the team at Explore. |
