President & Treasurer - Brian Murray"Mr SSANZ" Brian is the well known face of SSANZ and honorary life member. He has a strong background in shorthanded and ocean racing with highlights being crewing on well known yachts such as Fidelis, Aquila Doro, Elliott Marine (later to become Primo) and Hydroflow. Brian also extensively campaigned his own yacht "Green Hornet" in Auckland to Gisborne Races, Two handed Round North Island Race and Auckland Fiji Race before taking on his biggest challenge of a Two Handed Melbourne Osaka race. Unfortunately Green Hornet was lost at sea in atrocious conditions out from Sydney. Brian has since owned Celebrity (a Farr 11.6) and now owns Einstein (a Elliott 10m) which regularly competes in SSANZ events. Now more involved in the promotion and organisation of the Shorthanded races he loves so much, but Brian is always keen to tell a few stories over a rum...

Chairman - Cameron ThorpeCameron has a extensive sailing background of over 20 years but is probably best known as half of the Two Handed crew on the Farr 1020 Hard Labour. Hard Labour won the 2005 SSANZ Round North Island Race on ORC, 2004 and 2005 Coastal Classic Two Handed division (beating 12 fully crew 1020's in '05 to win the class prize as well !) and is always near the sharp end of the results in the SIMRAD series. Cameron helmed Hard Labour to win the Farr 1020 Nationals in 2002 and 2006. Cameron has twice been on the winning crew of the New Zealand National Keelboat Champs and also races the Etchells "The Boat" achieving a top 10 performance in the 2002 worlds. As Chairman Cameron wants to see the continued growth of shorthanded sailing and see more boats out on the water...

Vice Chairman - Steve AshleySteve Ashley has been there and done it all. Steve loves a challenge and has competed in 4 Round North Island Races, 1 Round New Zealand Race (finishing 1st overall on handicap) as well as the infamous '79 Fastnet race. Steve isn't a huge fan of todays shorter races demanded by our busy lives and would love to see the return of "real races" for "real men (and women)" and really put the challenge back into sailing. As such Steve is a huge fan of SSANZ's Round North Island Races and believes it to be the best race in New Zealand bar none ! If you ever find yourself in a great deal of trouble, there is a good chance Steve could be dropped in by helicopter to help you out and get the boat home. Steve was involved with the following well known rescues : 1994 Westpac Helicopter Rescue of "Mighty Merry Too" off northern NZ 1997 Westpac Helicopter Rescue of "Sanur" off northern east coast of NZ 2002 Westpac Helicopter Rescue of "Karewa" 60 miles off Manukau Heads Certified RYA DTp and MOT Yachtmaster Offshore, RNZCGF Yachtmaster Ocean, NZRFS Restricted Radio Operator Certified, it's hard to think of a better man to come to your aid. Steve is a professional yacht rigger with his own business The Rigging Shop based in Westhaven. Steve is a honorary life member of SSANZ and has made a huge contribution. He is often the last person left recording finishers and making sure everyone is safe.

Committee - Dougall LoveDougall started sailing P Class when he was about 10 years old in Akaroa Harbour but didn't really start sailing keelboats until living in Lyttelton in the early 1980's. This and several deliveries to and from Auckland, Wellington, Sydney, Tahiti and the Pacific Islands gave him a love of longhaul and offshore sailing which has continued since moving to Auckland in 1987. Together with his brother-in-law he purchased the Young 88 Paddy Wagon in 1988. Sailing this well was a big learning curve, much of it done on the SSANZ two handed races of the day - the Barrier 250, the White Island race, the Berrocca Barrier series, etc. In 1996 Dougall competed in the Round North Island 2 Handed Race with good sailing mate Pete Jordan aboard Paddy Wagon. This was a great race but a long way on a Young 88! Since the RNI sailing was interupted by a couple of years living in Europe and various business committments. The time living in Europe introduced the IMOCA Open and the Mini Transat boats which still remain an interest. Since returning to NZ, business and family committments have limited sailing to Wednesday night racing and some SIMRAD series sailing when the Frenzy was still in Auckland. It is Dougall's intention to continue short handed sailing in particular and plans to own his own boat for this purpose in due course. In the mean time it's likely Dougall will continue to fire the start gun and take your finish times in the wee hours of the morning

Committee - Dave MasonDave started in trailer yachts after a lifetime with power boats. He was once a boat builder for Mason Marine (family firm) building Clippers, and quite involved in power boat racing when milk was 4c a pint and petrol was 42c a gallon ! Dave won the National and Auckland Trailer Yacht Champs in 1988 and then moved on to the Young 88 class. Dave has owned several Young 88s achieving 2,5,7,9,1,4,2,5 on line in the Nationals. He won the Nationals with "Undercover" in 2001. Dave then moved on to "Frenzy" a Lambert 35 in which he scored a few good results in the SIMRAD series before the real challenge of the 2002 Two Handed Round North Island where "Frenzy" finished 3rd in division. Dave's experience with his company Brandgroup in advertising, publicity and brand building has proved invaluable to SSANZ. Dave is our creative genius and has inspired a huge lift in the presentation for our races and website.

Committee - Philip HartPhilip is well known to many as the owner of the iconic pink catamaran "Sundreamer", musician at numerous prizegivings and prolific poster on crew.org. His sailing background starts almost 40 years ago in the Waikato sailing dinghies and trailer yachts and finally keelboats and multihulls. Philip has been a flag officer of 5 sailing clubs and associations as well as race administrator for numerous regattas. Given the right conditions Sundreamer is never far from the front of the fleet and has enjoyed numerous race wins in Coastal, Tauranga and SSANZ as well as still holding a couple of race records.
In 2001 and following years Sundreamer restarted multihull involvement in the SSANZ series and despite being the only participant on occasions persisted and managed to get a few more along over the years. Multihulls are ideally suited to short handed sailing and more are being encouraged to take part. Last year we had over 10 turn up for individual SSANZ races and we hope to have more participate in the whole series this year.
